Hollymae believes she will eventually rule the City of Dar, but when her brother is born late in her parent's life, she has doubts. She hates her brother more and more each day as his hair color begins to change. Still, being the oldest, Hollymae holds on to her dream to carry on her father's reign.
On her father's death bed she learns her brother will be the new King, not her, because he possesses the golden hair like their father.
Heartbroken, Hollymae's father talks to her about the gift only she has. A special gift that gives her another purpose in life. He tells her she can't rule Dar because she is to become Queen of the Beasts.
Hollymae doesn't know the full strength of her powers, or the many powers that hasn't even surfaced yet, but with her faithful companions beside her, she begins her quest.

The Rose A Tale of Fantasy edition by Sue Julsen Barbara Pack Children eBooks Reviews
Holy moly this is the worst voiceover I ever heard. Its really bad. Its so bad that its funny. You can hear the narrator breath between sentences like she is winded from walking a flight of stairs. Bad acting, and a heavy voice. She doesn't sound like a princess she sounds like a waffle waitress at a really scary truck stop. Which makes it impossible to think of anything nice.
I can't believe this one manly voice (the narrator does the princess and the king in the same breath!) is supposed to be a delicate young female. The voice sounds like a waffle waitress or maybe even a factory line worker. But not feminine in the slightest. Is there chewing in the background? Do you want fries with that, princess?! Narrator would be better suited to work on Big Momma's House, the audiobook.
